Americans Should Not Travel to Venezuela Due to Conflict

Image
by Brian Lau | Link to Article Summary : Lately, there has been tension stirring between the US and Venezuela. This happened after a politician named Juan Guaidó campaigned to become the "interim president" of Venezuela by rebelling against Nicolás Maduro, the president at the time. Guaidó felt strongly that Maduro's re-election was unfair. So President Trump and the US decided to speak out in support of Guaidó's cause. The US also imposed sanctions (trade bans) with Venezuela on oil as an attempt to stop the Venezuelan economy from growing and give Maduro less control over the economy. All in all, the US ended up Guaidó to a successful election as an interim president of Venezuela on January 5, 2019. In the following weeks, many people who were loyal supporters of Maduro were very angry at Guaidó's election. Viewing the US as an enemy due to their support of Guaidó, Venezuela began to assault and detain large numbers of Americans, even those who were ...

400 Years After First Slave Ship, Virginians Still Struggle with Race

"[Enslaved Africans] would come on ships right on the edge of the water," Egunfemi says. "Then [slave traders] would march them in the middle of the night because the wealthy Richmonders did not want to see people that have just come from a three-month journey from Africa. Barefoot. The smell was unbearable." Link By: Carolina Lopez Summary: Free Egunfemi, founder of Untold RVA and independent historian, shares Richmond's untold stories.  Gabriel, in the drawing, was a "hero" who tried to hold the governor of Virginia hostage in 1800 to bargain for freedom for slaves. Gabriel's rebellion failed after someone reported the plot. Gabriel and his conspirators were discovered and hung. Since 1600, the first enslaved Africans arrived in the English colonies. Because white Virginians used African slavery to expand the tobacco industry, they became the most powerful colony in the New World. Slaves like Gabriel fought back as white Virginian...

Image
Snow Squalls bring Near-Whiteout Conditions to Northeast article link here summary by Camila Krause A series of snow-squalls are ripping through the Northeast cities - New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc. There has already been 9 reported deaths. The storms have brought near-whiteout conditions,  making driving on roads a dangerous task. Officials in the Midwest are warning people of almost instant frostbite as temperatures reach farther below zero .Thousands of flights and trains have been canceled - mainly in and out of Chicago. Nearly 70% of the continental United States are continuing to see temperatures at or below freezing. The weather has been described as the "coldest air in a generation." Connection: I can connect this to the rising sea levels around the world. These winter storms are a weather phenomenon, which many scientist believe could be linked to global warming - just like the rising sea levels. Questions: 1. Do you believe that global war...

China helps build Wealth! URL:  https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/01/29/magazine/china-globalization-kazakhstan. html by: Nick Lee  Summary: In the world today, we are faced with the ideas of expansion; to the moon or spreading out to areas of desolation in Eurasia. The specific spot is near Kazakhstan and it was an area in which the Soviet Union had used to farm and drill oil from the ground. This is Chinas main goal of getting and gaining this land, the total profit would be $30 million from being able to connect the oil pipes with China's. Also by gaining and using this land properly, China would be able to use seaports for excessive trade. But not all of the land is used for good. There were around $130 million dollars found in the smuggling ring. There is high corruption and very few people who live here are wealthy. Opinion: My opinion on this article is that there are many factors contributing to securing land and its uses carry a history go...

800,000 workers can breathe a sigh of relief as government reopens

Image
https://newsela.com/read/government-shut-down-ends/id/49057/ Summary: In Washington D.C, January 25,  Donald Trump reluctantly reopened the government after shutting down the federal agencies for 35 days. The shutdown was recorded as the longest in history. President Trump took back his stipulation that Congress give him the money to separate the US from Mexico before federal workers are allowed back to work.  Trump planned to sign the legislation that would fund closed agencies, in order to persuade lawmakers to fund the wall.  The Senate, House, and later Trump, signed the deal that would get employees back to work. With the shutdown and the thousands of workers missing their payday, the president was forced to reopen the government when the Democrats refused to make a deal that would fund the wall. Many Americans are blaming Trump for the prolonged standoff as the number of polls against the wall increases. The shutdown is to continue on February 15 if Congress...

Every official who has something in jail for things such as bribery. this dam has racked up 19 million dollars worth of debt which is something ecuador cant afford with money. So they are settling this debt with oil which would cause the country to fall into recession.  Connection: A connection that I made is with what is happening presently with Donald Trump. he is trying to make Mexico pay for a border wall that is on their land. a difference that can be seen is that the wall has not been built and the Dam has.  Questions: ...

Pelosi claims win over trump in the state of the union shutdown Article link here Summary: The CNN article covers the current state of the government shutdown. Pelosi told trump that he will not be allowed to give the state of the union speech in the House chamber, and trump lashed out on Twitter by saying " She's afraid of the truth and the super left Democrats, the radical Democrats." and that he plans on giving the SOTU address at a different venue. Trump is also still having a hard time of turning the tides of his battle for the wall, when CNN asked people who they thought was winning the argument,  47% of those asked thought that the speaker (Pelosi and other government officials) were doing a better job handling shutdown talks, compared to 35% for the President. Connection: This connects (in length of the shutdown) to the 2013 shutdown between Obama and the republican house that was solved in 16 days compared to the current 35 days. The argument with Obam...

URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/us/civil-servants-government-work.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage Summary: The standoff between President Trump and the Senate has pushed the government shutdown to a record high of 32 days (as of January 24th). This government shutdown has lead many NASA employees to miss their second paycheck of 2019. Though NASA is a US federal company, its shutdown affects people all around the world, like Dr. Costa of Brazil. Many newer NASA employees have diverted their efforts to working for other companies, like Lyft, to barely make ends meet. As NASA employee Dr. Kulis says, “We didn’t get Ph.D.s just to sit around”. Some of the smartest and most hardworking people are not being put to work, and this is showing a clear negative impact on national and international research and development...

'Everything is an adventure now': Saudi women celebrate new driving freedoms as ban is lifted https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/saudi-arabia-women-driving-ban-lifts-end-celebrations-licences-riyadh-jeddah-dammam-a8414591.html Summary:   This article talks about how Saudi Arabia abolished its ban on women driving and gives examples of how some women enjoyed their first time as the driver. These women have such little power in their community because it is runned by a whole male system that the pleasure of driving is such a big step into the right direction of better equality. These women have been frustrated because they would always have to rely on either a father or a brother to drive them places, even though they are fully capable of taking themselves. Abolishing this rule gives these women freedom that they haven’t had before and many of them are excited for this new step. Yet, many of them will not be able to drive for a while due to long waits...

3 Officers Acquitted of Covering Up for Colleague in Laquan McDonald Killing

Image
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/us/laquan-mcdonald-officers-acquitted.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage     In 2014, there was a young black teenager by the name of Laquan McDonald who was shot by a white officer by the name of Jason Van Dyke. There were two other officers that were involved in this case who lied to protect the officer who shot and killed Laquan. On Thursday, all of the charges against these officers were acquitted and many viewed this as a "code of silence" in the police department. The prosecutors came forward to present the jury with as much evidence that they could provide.  The prosecutors also argued that the officers "shooed" away the witnesses so that it would be easier to cover it up. I believe that these officers knew what they were doing and that they had made a mistake. This would then bring me to believe that they were trying to cover it up. This connects to a case in 1955 in Mississippi on a ...

Trump claims that, "There is no longer a threat from North Korea" and that "everybody can now feel much safer". North Korea on the other hand has not taken major steps to remove its nuclear weapon programs, continues to develop its ballistic weapons at several locations, and has denied international inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site. After reading the article, I was amazed that Presiden...

President Trumps Discussion: Pulling U.S. Out of NATO

Image
url:  https://www.nytimes.com/ 2019/01/14/us/politics/nato- president-trump.html This article is discussing the movement out of the alliance tied with NATO that President Trump is accountable for. He reveals that his arrangement of removing this alliance will cause a disruption in his ties with Mr. Putin and how "he did not see the point of the military alliance, which he presented as a drain on the United States." People are starting to get worried about the removal of this alliance that has been building up for decades as it contributes to less help from other countries if it leaves. This connects to World War II because this event is dealing with the complications between the U.S alliances and our military position among other countries. If we let go of NATO our resources, battle strategies, defense, and power will all decrease if we get attacked from other countries.  Why do you think President Trump wants to abolish our alliance with NATO? Do you thin...
