Summary/ Reaction: Last Sunday, Army Staff Sargent Jake Talbot went to CDY fitness in Troy Missouri, his gym of eight years, wearing a 2016 Trump Campaign shirt. He had worn this shirt multiple times in the past except this time was different, he was approached by the gym's owner, Liz Drew, who asked him to no longer wear the shirt saying, "it could be construed as racist and several of my members had complained about feeling uncomfortable when [you] wore that." After the situation, Talbot left and began posting on social media about what happened, arguing that Trump doesn't represent racism, and the act of forcing him to not wear the shirt was unjust.
In my personal opinion, I think that the gym owner had the right to force him to stop wearing the shirt considering she owns the business, however, I do believe Talbot has a valid argument because, people should be able to express their political opinion even if it might offend others.
Connection: This event could possibly be compared to the Red Scare because, The US was attempting to block the ideas of Communism which they didn't agree with.
Questions:
- Do you think the Gym Owner was in the right place?
- Do you think People in the US have become too sensitive to other people's political opinions?
Though the owner does technically have the right to make him not wear the shirt, she failed to overlook the fact that the man is literally paying her to use that gym. In hindsight, I believe it was a poor decision to make him stop wearing the shirt, as her business has now received plenty of negative publicity. If the owner had thought this through beforehand, she might have not made the decision to approach the veteran.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that by shooing the "Trump" man away, the owner of the gym is losing business that is critical to the overall success of the gym. Additionally, I would argue that the owner is the one who did wrong, not the man himself. After all, this is America, and not allowing the man to express freedom in speech and opinion goes against the ideals of the First Amendment. As for America in general, I feel like many people are forgetting about the significance of the First Amendment, which should continue to shine through regardless of what situation. Regardless of how bad Trump might be, there are people who freely express their opinions in support of him. Not letting the man wear a shirt that happens to bear the word "Trump" on it is simply an unjust act by the gym owner.
DeleteI think t hat the member at the gym should be allowed to wear what they want as long as it isn't offensive. The gym owner should not of reacted in the way that they did because they were removing and interfering with business.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other comments as this article has given this fitness center and owner a bad reputation even though it it would technically be her fault. I believe that people should be able to express any type of passion or style they have as long as it doesnt attack or harass another group. Whether its political or not, everyone has different opinions and people are sometimes too stubborn to respect others choices which could lead to the act of violence and commotion.
