Summary/Reaction - After President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a meeting together in Singapore, President Trump appears to be underwhelmed by the possible nuclear threat that North Korea is continuing to develop. Trump claims that, "There is no longer a threat from North Korea" and that "everybody can now feel much safer". North Korea on the other hand has not taken major steps to remove its nuclear weapon programs, continues to develop its ballistic weapons at several locations, and has denied international inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site. After reading the article, I was amazed that President Trump would think that North Korea has no potential at all to threaten the United States with a nuclear attack. I thought that President Trump would take take the negotiations being made with North Korea as a way to make peace with them but still would remain cautious

Historical Connection - I can connect this event to the meetings between the US and the Russia during the Cold War. In that meetings, the presidents of both countries discussed alternatives for avoiding nuclear war

Questions for Discussion - Do you think Trump is making the right decision in trying to make peace with North Korea? Do you think North Korea is possibly using the truce as a way to deceive the United States?

  2. Though President Trump seems to be giving the country a false sense of security by saying we are much safer now, there may be missing links to the puzzle. As with the Russian peace talks, President Trump has shown that he does not like to reveal the true contents of his conversations with the leaders of other nations. Therefore, after meeting with Kim Jon Un, President Trump might be hiding information that may be crucial to understanding the situation. It is very possible that hostility from North Korea has been been entirely negotiated out of the picture. Just as it is important to understand the available information, it is just as important to analyze what information we don't have as well.
