Snow Squalls bring Near-Whiteout Conditions to Northeast

Snow Squalls bring Near-Whiteout Conditions to Northeast

Ice covers Lake Michigan's shoreline in Chicago on Wednesday.

A series of snow-squalls are ripping through the Northeast cities - New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc. There has already been 9 reported deaths. The storms have brought near-whiteout conditions,  making driving on roads a dangerous task. Officials in the Midwest are warning people of almost instant frostbite as temperatures reach farther below zero .Thousands of flights and trains have been canceled - mainly in and out of Chicago. Nearly 70% of the continental United States are continuing to see temperatures at or below freezing. The weather has been described as the "coldest air in a generation."

Connection: I can connect this to the rising sea levels around the world. These winter storms are a weather phenomenon, which many scientist believe could be linked to global warming - just like the rising sea levels.

Questions:

1. Do you believe that global warming could be at fault for these storms? If so, what do you believe the US should be doing to hopefully prevent future storms such as these?

2. People have been told to stay inside to prevent frostbite, but what about those without anywhere to go? What do you believe should be done to help them?

3. Should the government be responding to these horrific weather conditions? If so, what should they be expected to do?

  1. There is no doubt that global warming is the cause for this. As we are seeing across the country right now, the entire western hemisphere is being slammed by the coldest weather in several decades. It is scientifically proven that when the atmosphere warms, the the extreme temperatures, both cold and hot, become more powerful. I think it should be mandatory for people to stay inside during temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius, especially in areas that are underprepared for the weather. I also think the government should be taking action to make sure all houses have heating during storms like these.

    1. I completely agree with Carl - there is absolutely no doubt that global warming is to blame. I find Carl's recommendations interesting, as they are all likely to be effective in improving the way in which these storms are approached. The US, and countries worldwide, need to create policies and guidelines for extreme weather conditions, like these storms, since global warming is just progressing by the day.

    2. These are obvious results of global warming. At the moment, there's a four part project called the Green New Deal being discussed through congress, combating carbon emissions among other things. I agree with Carl about the government needing to take initiative and helping the people who are being affected by these weather conditions.
