It doesn't matter if Ecuador can afford this dam.China still gets payed Image result for REVENTADOR, Ecuador damhttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/24/world/americas/ecuador-china-dam.html

Summary: The Dam in Reventador, Ecuador is in bad condition. This Dam was built and engineered by China to solve the countries energy shortage and to get them out of poverty. Instead the dam has become a money pit. It has put them in debt and has major scandals surrounding it. Every official who has something in jail for things such as bribery. this dam has racked up 19 million dollars worth of debt which is something ecuador cant afford with money. So they are settling this debt with oil which would cause the country to fall into recession.
Connection: A connection that I made is with what is happening presently with Donald Trump. he is trying to make Mexico pay for a border wall that is on their land. a difference that can be seen is that the wall has not been built and the Dam has.
Questions: Do you think that China should be able to do this?                                                             Is it Justifiable?

  1. Thank you for your post. Interesting to see how China is active also in South America! Could you please clarify something for me? If Ecuador can't afford to pay for the repairs with currency, but have enough oil to pay the Chinese that way, why do they need the dam at all? You mention they need it to produce electricity, but if they have oil....? Anyway, just wondering why that is.

  2. Well I can’t speak for ecudor but what they are doing is they are selling the loans to China for a discounted rate which china is then selling the oil to a third party which gives them excess money. The Chinese are the ones who originally financed the dam in loans I hope this helps.

  3. To answer the first question I believe that the people living in Reventador should not allow China to set up a device that would only put the economy in a bad place. I think that the people in Reventador should stop providing China with oil because I think providing the location for the dam is a large enough payment to China and shouldn't further pay them with oil.

  4. i dont think china should be able to do this because first they made Ecuador in debt which is causing them to be in bad condition and having not so much energy in their system.. China will put them in more debt.

  5. I think what China is doing is unjustifiable because the are putting Ecuador in major debt . They have caused them to suffer economically and having them repay them in oil is only making the situation worse and Ecuador is going to severely suffer with all the debt that China has caused them.

  6. I think that what China is doing is very dishonorable on their part, and is just taking advantage of a smaller country, but they do indeed have the right to do this. China was the one who built the dam for Ecuador with their permission, otherwise it would not have been built. Corruption is sadly a common thing in central and southern America, so it would be the politicians fault that they are putting their own countries in debt. China shouldn't do this with Ecuador, and President Trump shouldn't do this with Mexico without their permission.

  7. I don't think that China was qualified for this job in the first place. China already has a well known reputation for turning things like this into cash-grabs. I do believe that this was at least somewhat China's fault, but I think Ecuador takes some of the responsibility. Ecuador definitely could have made better choices regarding investors. I think that choosing to work with the US would have been a much better option. The US already has good foreign relations with Ecuador, and the two countries have been close-knit allies for quite some time. The US also has a tendency to succeed with this type of thing, whereas China does not. Also, the US is far closer than China to Ecuador, meaning that communications and transactions would happen at a much faster rate, which would definitely contribute to a much higher chance towards the dam's success.

  8. I think that what China is doing is unjustifiable because it's not fair that they are putting Ecuador in debt. I do think they are allowed to fix their dam if it's in bad conditions since it's needed to solve the country's energy storage. It's not fair though that if China is in bad conditions and asking for help, they are only causing Ecuador to be in bad conditions.
