URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/us/civil-servants-government-work.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage Summary: The standoff between President Trump and the Senate has pushed the government shutdown to a record high of 32 days (as of January 24th). This government shutdown has lead many NASA employees to miss their second paycheck of 2019. Though NASA is a US federal company, its shutdown affects people all around the world, like Dr. Costa of Brazil. Many newer NASA employees have diverted their efforts to working for other companies, like Lyft, to barely make ends meet. As NASA employee Dr. Kulis says, “We didn’t get Ph.D.s just to sit around”. Some of the smartest and most hardworking people are not being put to work, and this is showing a clear negative impact on national and international research and development...
I believe in the idea of imperialism for a country, but no longer believe it is a good idea for powerful countries to continue to take over empty land. Instead, what I would prefer would be for some smaller countries to get in on the action, or more viably, negotiate a compromise with other nations over the land. When immense, powerful nations like China expand solely for their own benefits, it leads the world away from unity, as it encourages domination by those larger nations. After all, most large powers like the US (especially in its Manifest Destiny stage), Russia, China, and India imperialise not only for profit and resources, but most importantly in order to assert their own power over other nations. Here, for example, China is trying to increase and promote unhealthy dominance over Kazakhstan through acquisition of former, very valuable oil fields--thus harming the native cultures of Khorgos. Taking over empty land is harmful for smaller countries if done by larger countries because it discourages the idea of having fairly balanced cultures and power around the world, but it is beneficial if done by smaller countries looking to grow. As for the US, one significant expansion was when the US annexed Alaska and made it its 49th state. The US looked to purchase this land because it wanted to utilize the abundance of oil there, which they believed would run lots of money into the US economy.
ReplyDeleteI see your point Brian and I agree with you. Imperialism have been able for bigger countries to over throw smaller ones. I however think that with to many smaller cities there will be more division in the social and economic issue, and that is why I think countries like China should be given rights and authority to take land.
