Summary/Reaction: Due to the government shutdown and the growing tension between the Democratic House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and President Donald Trump there has been issues with federal workers not being able to receive any payment for their work until the shutdown is over. Pelosi had simply announced that her military flight overseas trip has been postponed due to workers not being able to work until they are payed, Pelosi later agrees with them because she understands their situation and disagrees with Trumps' decisions. On the other hand Trump reschedules her trip because he rather have Pelosi in Washington negotiating with him to end the government shutdown instead of flying overseas. I am shocked by this article because this is the longest government shutdown in History and if this shutdown continues the cost to the economy will cost more than the wall, and my question is why is Trump pressing the issue of an outcome that may or may not happen?

History Connection: In September 30, 1984 the government shutdown for two days when Congress and President Ronald Regan, at the time, could not agree on a deal due to the house wanting the crime-fighting package which President Regan supported, but the house also wanted the water project package which President Regan did not support. Additionally a temporary extension was passed, and both sides came up with a compromise and the government did not reopen until October 3, 1984. Even though there were disagreements and possible arguments their decision took up a long time to come up with a new deal. I am connecting this historical event with todays news because there would be arguments made due to a disagreement, but there is always a possible outcome that can cost less and effect not only federal workers but all of US in a positive way, even though the longer the government shutdown the more money adds up.

Questions for Discussion: If you were in this situation how might you handle Trumps decisions or the government shutdown? What agreements or negotiations do you think Congress and the President would come up with to end this government shutdown?

  1. In my opinion I think that President Trump is being nonnegotiable because of the amount of money he is asking for from the Democrats to build the wall. Either he needs to make his terms more fundable or just come up with a different plan that does't involve in building the wall.

    1. I agree that President Trump and Congress need to make a compromise to end the shutdown, as the article reveals that the Secret Service are unpaid, which endangers the security of the upcoming State of the Union address. I think Congress and the President should compromise with a plan to strengthen border security that is not as costly as building a wall. Ideally, I would like to see the process of legal immigration refined to become more time efficient and easier, so more people could go through it, along with some security checks. This could accomplish the border security President Trump wants with the wall.

  2. If I were to be Trump and have the Shut down not happen, there would need to be a way congress and Trump agreed to a deal that the US will not be paying for the wall. I think Trump will be willingly to let people go ends on ends without a meal and other material in daily life. He has lived life full of gaining material and wealth with work but mostly without it. COngress should not let one persons voice take over the many of the United States.

  3. I believe that President Trump is a genius for the shutdown. I don't believe that not paying people is correct, but he is cornering the opposing side into paying for the wall. It's a power move because it gives Trump the wall no matter what. The only remaining factor is time, when will the money begin to come in?
