Drag Highlights the Struggle for Acceptance

Image
Lin k      Gender and sexuality have become a large part of society and culture today. People today have become more and more ambiguous towards different forms of gender/fashion expression. The popular tv show, RuPaul's Drag Race, provides a very outgoing and exaggerated form of queer representation. Many of the queens featured on the show identify as male, and dress up in exaggerated feminine makeup with large wigs and colorful clothing. Drag is typically done as a form of entertainment, with dance routines and comedy acts. Additionally, drag has become a large part in the LGBT movement, symbolizing freedom, acceptance, and providing a form of representation, regardless of age, occupation, or sex. As drag is applicable to people of any age/gender/sexual orientation, many people who do not self identify with parts of the LGBT community can at least acknowledge drag as a fun, brave, and confident form of self-expression. (Although it may be a little PG13...)   ...

SpaceX launches privately funded Israeli  moon lander https://www.cbsnews.com/news/spacex-launch-spacex-falcon-9-carries-privately-funded-israeli-moon-lander-indonesian-comsat-watch-live-stream-today/ Summary: Israel successfully launched their first moon-lander on a SpaceX rocket last Monday. The satellite is a privately-funded spacecraft promoting the STEM educational program. This program was intended to inspire the young generation to embrace science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They plan for the moon-lander to reach the Moon's surface on April 11. The SpaceX Falcon 9 is America's latest high technology rocket pioneered by yet another private space company. I was impressed how the first stage rocket was able to land on a boat with great precision.  History Connection: In the mid-1950's the Soviets and Americans were locked into Space Race. The Soviets successfully launched the first satellite into space; the Sputnik in 1957. This was wh...

Trump Declares a national emergency to pay for border wall

Image
Link: https://newsela.com/read/national-emergency-border/id/49660/ Summary: February 15th was when President Donald Trump  stated that the situation with having the border is a "national emergency ". By Donald Trump saying that building the wall is essential, it  gives him the opportunity to bypass Congress Constitutional powers.  It does not give him a restraint on his spending. Therefore, he tries to move the government money towards the funding of the wall. He wants to prevent immigrants  from coming to America and from them crossing the border illegally. However, congress has the chance to terminate the state of emergency trumps claims by having the support of 2/3 of lawmakers. Reaction: It is agitating to know that the President is not helping the country at all with his ignorant choice by saying that building the border is something that has to be done as soon as possible based on his foolish reason. History Connection: I can connect this to the Chinese ...

Alabama Newspaper Editor Calls on KKK to Lynch Democrats

Image
By Abby Yee "Alabama newspaper editor calls on KKK to lynch Democrats"  Link Summary: Goodloe Sutton wrote an editorial in his newspaper, the Democrat-Reporter, about how Democrats were going to raise taxes in Alabama, suggesting that the KKK should lynch them, as he believed Socialist-Communist Democrats were un-American. Additionally, he claimed that the Klan was not a violent organization, contradicting his previous suggestions. Other Democrats in Congress responded with disgust and argued that the call for white supremacy was not only dated, but threatening to people of color and should be stopped. Reaction: I was very surprised by this editorial because I think it is very extreme to ask a terrorist group to lynch people who are increasing taxes. Historic Connection: This article obviously connects to the KKK uprisings during Reconstruction, where Klan members used threats and force to keep African Americans from becoming equal economically and politically, seei...

Parkland activists don't plan on slowing down anytime soon

https://newsela.com/read/parkland-activists-one-year-later/id/49528/ Summary: Since a year after the Florida High mass shooting, David Hogg and his campaign, “march for our lives” have kept on receiving global attention for his ambitious efforts for the safety of our country. His campaign has been advocating for more laws that oppose the ones that make it harder for people to get guns. He believes that more access to guns can provide defensive safety and can help prevent many future incidents like the one his school experienced in Parkland High, Florida (the mass shooting). In my opinion: I feel that it is necessary for guns to become more accessible because just like during the prohibition, the criminals always find a way/ access to the alcohol (or gun in current situation). But the ones who would use guns only for their safety; would have a hard time getting their hands on one. Therefore, i would feel that more access to guns would be safer since peo...

Same-Sex Couples Sue For The Right To Marry In Japan February 9, 2019 https://www.npr.org/2019/02/14/694628472/same-sex-couples-sue-for-the-right-to-marry-in-japan Summary Thirteen same-sex couples have filed a lawsuit in Japan arguing that the country's rejection of same-sex marriage violates their constitutional rights. Japan is predicted to be the next country in Asia to allow same sex marriage.  Japan's government has interpreted the constitution's marriage provisions to only permit marriage between heterosexual couples. But that reading ignores other parts of the constitution that guarantee equality, lawyers for the couples say. Opinion In my opinion, Japanese inheritance laws should change since they are restrictive toward gay people. I would be disappointed if i was not able accept my dead relative's belongings legally just because of their preferences.  Connection This is similar to Frank Kemeny and the gay rights movement he ...
