  • Summary/Reaction: This article speaks about a protest that sparked around schools in Sacramento. The schools in Sacramento were targeted by a church that is known for being very hateful and closed minded. These churches targeted these schools because they supported LGBTQ+ people and the church found that to be a sin so they protested it. The church protesters decided to protest by standing outside of schools LGBTQ+ centers and spread hate and fear about being LGBTQ+. However, counter-protesters didn't wait too long before they took action and started handing out heart stickers and rainbow pins. Though the protesters continued to protest and spread their views that being LGBTQ+ was a sin. In the end the counter-protesters united and protested till the end.
History Connection: I can connect this situation to how homosexuals were prosecuted because
they were believed to be communist during the '50s.Except for the fact that in this case people united
to help the LGBTQ+ people instead of hating them.

  • Question for Discussion: In the future how can we use this situation to push for total equality?

  1. Great article and an important topic for sure. I was wondering if you could tell me how this issue is being addressed at your high school? Is there a policy, rules, guidelines, or anything like that in place to ensure that all people are able to be who they are?

  2. I think we can look back on this situation and see how the US still needs to work on accepting the different types of people. Situations similar have happened in our past history so, why aren't people learning from it? Like in this situation, people need to stand up for what they believe in, and what is right.

  3. in the future we can use this situation to push for equality by looking back at the issue and realizing that we have to understand and respect others for who they truly are. whether they are apart of the LGBTQ+ community or not , everyone should feel accepted . We need to learn from this situation and stand up for others , our personal beliefs and what we believe is ethical.

  4. Personally, I think we can't push towards full equality because everyones different. Not to be a downer, but these types of situations can be happy or miserable for certain people and as many people try to go all out for world peace, there will always be a person filled with hate or discrimination for no reason. I feel that this topic is more towards the self love and self respect that should be empowered especially in minority groups that have felt hatred, not to change peoples minds. Many humans can be stubborn or selfish especially if they dont want change and this can potentially promote more anger that they already have.

  5. I don't think there is going to be a way to achieve 'total equality' because people are always going to have different ideas of what is right and what is wrong in terms of sexuality. I personally don't think that bullying or protesting someone based on their sexuality is right though.

  6. I believe that more and more support towards LGBT movements will create a safe and supportive environment for LGBT youth. We can continue to push for equality, but the occasional protester will always make the same arguments. As long as they are not actively denying someone their freedom, people will continue to push towards equality, respectfully.
