Drag Highlights the Struggle for Acceptance
Link
Gender and sexuality have become a large part of society and culture today. People today have become more and more ambiguous towards different forms of gender/fashion expression. The popular tv show, RuPaul's Drag Race, provides a very outgoing and exaggerated form of queer representation. Many of the queens featured on the show identify as male, and dress up in exaggerated feminine makeup with large wigs and colorful clothing. Drag is typically done as a form of entertainment, with dance routines and comedy acts. Additionally, drag has become a large part in the LGBT movement, symbolizing freedom, acceptance, and providing a form of representation, regardless of age, occupation, or sex. As drag is applicable to people of any age/gender/sexual orientation, many people who do not self identify with parts of the LGBT community can at least acknowledge drag as a fun, brave, and confident form of self-expression. (Although it may be a little PG13...)
Drag in its most ambiguous form relates to when the Obama administration clarified Title IX, which expressed protections and rights for transgender students. This letter clarified definitions and terminology of transgender students, as well as allowing them to use the gender-assigned bathrooms they identify with. Just with the presence of drag kings and queens as well as RuPaul's show, drag helps to normalize the idea of people who stray away from the typical gender binary. Drag has become pinnacle in the representation and visibility of young queer and trans youth nationwide, and will continue to do so with its rising popularity. Hopefully with the perseverance of fierce, confident drag kings and queens, more normalization can come for the LGBT community.
What are your opinions on drag! Are you aware that it exists? If so, what do you like about it? If not, what can you learn from it? What about drag and/or self expression do you identify with?

My opinions on drag is as long as it doesnt give offense or harm anyone, they should be allowed to express their true being and manifest into what they feel is their real self. Im aware that they exist, and I like how they are able to express themselves and are proud to show who they are because majority of people cant do that.
ReplyDeleteI agree. As long as it is a movement that is self-based and does not hurt/invalidate people in the process, it is a wonderful form of self expression. It really shows bravery and courage per each individual.
DeleteHonestly, I do not have an opinion on drag. Some people love it, others don't, but for me, I could honestly careless. I do not mean that in a dismissive way - I think it is great that people use this as a form of self-expression. I simply mean that it does not affect my life, and therefore I do not really have an opinion on it. It isn't hurting anyone, it doesn't dismiss anyone's existence, it is simply a form of self-expression.
ReplyDeleteI agree, in my opinion its a show that does no harm to others, its just a show for self expression. I don't watch this show so theirs no impact on me for it but i see no harm in the show. everyone is entitled to express themselves freely.
Deletemy opinion on drag is that its them expressing their own way of living. If they want to wear makeup, then wear makeup and wear anything that would make them comfortable.
