Summary: Recently, a construction site gas line exploded in a San Francisco neighborhood and set off an inferno, burning five buildings. No one was injured in this explosion.  The incident happened in the city's Jordan Park neighborhood. Police and fire department  evacuated people.  The fire department mentioned, "I saw this spew of gas coming out of where they were working, 'That's a gas main,' "And within probably five seconds, all of a sudden it ignited and the flames just shot, like, straight up the air, probably 20, 30 feet up in the air. It was crazy." The smoke in the area was thick and the flames were reaching close to the buildings. A shelter was set up in a cathedral for evacuees who needed somewhere to stay.

Reflection: My reaction to this article is very shocking.  Having big fires in family neighborhoods are very dangerous, its so scary what a fire can do to people and to homes.  This fire didn't hurt anybody physically, but if the firefighters didn't come any sooner, people would've gotten extremely worried and stuck.

History Connection: I can connect this to the atomic bomb.  Even though the atomic bomb hurt many people, it still had the same outcome.  Many people were terrified and didn't know what to do.  Their homes, everything was burnt to the ground.  Firefighters tried their very best to see what happened, what caused it and how they can help.  This gas line explosion and the atomic bomb caused many people at risk.

Questions:
What would you do, if a fire happened near you? Would you help the people around you? Where would you go?

-How would you connect this fire to the atomic bomb?

  1. As you point out fires are generally quite dangerous and can pose immense threats to people's lives. I am struggling a bit with comparing a gas line explosion in SF - where nobody got injured - to dropping the a-bomb. I think that is a bit of a stretch. I was wondering if you would perhaps be able to compare this gas line explosion to other gas explosions or similar events in history and compare how the issue was handled today, to how it was handled then? What if you look at the earthquake in 1906 and look at the response back then? That might be a better point of comparison.

  2. If a fire happened near me I would gather my important belongings and get out of my place. I would try to help people around me but I have to make sure that I'm good before I can help others. I would go somewhere safe away from the fire. I could connect this to the atomic bomb because of the fear it brought people.
